Hi everyone, it's time for a new challenge at Seize the Birthday and TaeEun has chosen the theme, add gold.
or you can play along with our anything goes birthday option.
The design team and our party guest Jen have some wonderful ideas to inspire you, so I hope you get the chance to play along.
I wanted to use a stencil with texture paste and thought I'd try heat embossing some powders in gold, liquid platinum and turquoise to add colour to the texture paste.
Well the gold must be ancient as it wouldn't melt. So, I added some versamark ink and add a different gold powder. But because I'd removed the stencil, the powder went everywhere and looked a blobby mess when I heated it.
Never one to give up, I thought I'd make it look better with some Brushos Sprinkle it in gold. Sprinkled it on and spritzed on water......no, still not much chop!
It did have a lovely shimmer though lol!
Never one to waste anything (I am Scottish!) I thought I'd diecut a butterfly and see what it looked like.
I like it!
I traced around the butterfly to create a vellum layer too.
Here's a close up.
Here's the mess I diecut it from.
I stamped the sentiment, then added some gold ink through the same stencil as a border for the butterfly.
I'm linking up to some challenges:
Mix it Up Challenge, anything goes with the option of embossing.
Simon Says Stamp Wednesday, anything goes.
Cupcake Inspirations with a birthday celebration of their 500th challenge, congratulations!

Hey way to save it! Love the die cut bfly -- turned out awesome :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a gorgeous butterfly, Cathy! I love the turquoise and gold with the vellum! Wow!
ReplyDeleteWell I'm glad you didn't give up Cathy as the resulting butterfly is extremely pretty and a great idea to back it with vellum, and love the stencilled background using the gold ink through the stencil. I do however think the first background is really lovely and I think that you could use as is in some form on another card...we are our own worst critics. x
ReplyDeleteYour butterfly is beautiful and so is the background it is on. Glad you were able to use your "mess". Ha!
ReplyDeleteNow that is one AMAZING save, Cathy! Your butterfly is GORGEOUS! Love the different colours of embossing powders. It's so delicate looking with the vellum backing. And your stenciled background is a perfect place for the butterfly to light! xx
ReplyDeleteRegardless of the trials...the card is fabulous.
ReplyDeleteThat mess...isn't a mess at all!! It looks gorgeous!! Though I am still happy you got to use it on the butterfly, because that is a real beauty! Absolutely loving this card!
ReplyDeleteOMG! I am so impressed with this card and your design. It has that Wow factor.
ReplyDeleteI loved reading your blog and seeing your trials and triumphs! This came out lovely in the end and actually, I think the entire panel itself looked fabulous too! All in all your perseverance resulted in a great card.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Nancy - in your photo, the original panel is looking fine! But wow, the butterfly is gorgeous! And you still got your gold stencilling, just maybe not as you originally planned. ;) Beautiful card!
ReplyDeleteWish my disasters turned out this beautiful. Thanks for sharing your process and reminding me that it's ok to keep playing, it's only paper.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous save, Cathy ... that butterfly is spectacular! Hugs, Anita :)
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing card this turned out to be after the mishap! It's definitely got that WOW factor with all that gold and I love the vellum outline of the butterfly! Great save, fabulous card!
ReplyDeleteOh WOW ... this is just gorgeous Cathy! Thanks so much for playing in our challenge at Mix It Up!

Whoa, what cool idea and I didn't no, if EP gets ancient it doesn't melt!! I also take away the awesome idea of tracing a die cut from vellum. Thank you so much for joining us at the Cupcake Inspirations 500th Celebrations with this adorable card. Hugs ~ Ishani.
ReplyDeleteLove it, Cath!! It's amazing how you can make something from a (seeming) disaster! I love the effect on the butterfly!! A great card!! Can't wait to see what you use the rest of the piece for!!! LOL!!! Thanks so much for joining us at the Watercooler Wednesday Challenge this week. Take care! :)

ReplyDeleteThat totally worked - it's gorgeous! I may have to try to get this look on purpose!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous and elegant. Your perseverance/patience sure paid off. The coordinated stencil border ties it all together perfectly.
ReplyDeleteThe butterfly is beautiful with the subtle texture and the touch of turquoise!!! I hope you didn't throw the negative panel away :) !
ReplyDeleteI have the worst time with stencils and texture paste! I always end up with at least 3 smooshed attempts before I end up with something useable. I LOVE how your butterfly came out though - its gorgeous! Those are the best kind of happy accidents. :) Thanks for having me as a guest and for your sweet comments!
ReplyDeleteThe butterfly is exquisite, Cathy! What a great save!
ReplyDeleteWe are the beneficiaries of your persistence! Your butterfly is absolutely stunning! Love it - such a beautiful card. I need to remember to use my paste more often.
ReplyDeleteYou could use the left overs - put a sentiment in the blank butterfly space
